St. Joseph Nursing Home is a secure
free standing building. All entrances are locked with the
exception of the main entrance which is unlocked and visible by
staff from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Each and every exit door (including
the main entrance) has an alarm that when opened, alerts the staff
that someone is entering or exiting the facility.
For those residents who suffer from
various forms of dementia and may be at risk for elopement, we
employ the 'Wanderguard System'. An electronic bracelet is
secured to your loved one or their wheelchair/walker. When an
exit is attempted, the Wanderguard system lets out a series of
alarms and the doors automatically lock for 15 seconds ensuring that
staff members can intervene. In the event of a fire or other
disaster, fire alarms over-ride the Wanderguard system to ensure the
safety of all residents.
Quarterly fire and disaster training
is conducted for all staff members. These meetings are
mandatory and all in-services provide hands on participation.
